Honoree Nancy Clark Tanner

 

After working at IBM in Poughkeepsie and Manhattan, Nancy later moved to Kingston, New York as Personnel Staff Assistance. In 1959, she married Donald Tanner and is the Mother of six children: Todd, a writer living in Montana, Laura, an english professor at Boston College, Lance, an engineer working in the Greater New York area, Taren, a New York City Physical Education Teacher, Beth,a Principal in the Rhode Island Public Schools and Christopher, CEO of a technology company in California. Today, she is the loving grandmother of eleven grandchildren.

In November, 1976, Nancy became the founding Owner and Manager of the Book Cove on Arch Street in Pawling. Over twenty years later, the business moved to Charles Colman Boulevard, and she retired in 2007.

Nancy felt that the motivation factor in her continuing community involvement was receiving the DAR Good Citizenship medal at her high school graduation. A long-standing member of the Pawling Chamber of Commerce, she assumed the Presidency in 1983. In 1994 Mayor Guiliani presented her with the YMCA of Greater New York Volunteer of the Year award. In 1995 she was the recipient of the Key Bank’s Presidents’ Award for Volunteerism, and in 2003, she received the Mizzentop Day School Community Service Award. The Hudson Valley Council Boy Scouts of America honored her with their “Good Scout” award in 2006.

In addition to being Chair of the Village of Pawling Master Plan Steering Committee, Nancy’s past board positions have been with the Pawling Free Library, The Pawling Public Radio, The Pawling Freight Station Corporation, and the Pawling Concert Series, which she has served on for over 30 years. She is also currently a Trustee of the Akin Hall Association. In December 2016, she resigned from her long term Board position as a Director of the Pawling Community Foundation, which she joined in the early 1980’s when the organization was formed.

A graduate of Western Connecticut State University, Nancy,s favorite recreations are talks with her grandchildren, daily Murrow Park trail walks with her Golden Retriever, and writing and reading. She is a life-time member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Pawling.
